S+T+ARTS Regional Centres
June 2021 — December 2022

Projects

For the third time, the European Commission’s S+T+ARTS initiative appoints 12 new regional S+T+ARTS centers. This time with the theme Repairing The Present. The centers are meeting places and co-creation hubs for artists, scientists and technologists. They are now looking for 21 artists to do a fellowship there, in collaboration with entrepreneurs, climate experts and the general public, with the objective of helping to realize the European Green Deal and the new Bauhaus. The results will be unveiled in several European exhibitions. Throughout the project events are also planned around the theme. In Belgium, cleantech hub Snowball, GLUON and Bozar are joining forces to organize 2 residencies, some 10 events and 2 exhibitions in the region as a Regional S+T+ARTS Center. The Regional S+T+ARTS — Centers initiative aims to answer Europe’s ambition to be the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050. They address local challenges in an increasingly globalized context and bring the message of the S+T+ARTS initiative to the regional level. They do this by gathering and involving a broad network of experts, with representatives from policy, government, industry, ICT, education, academia and the cultural sector in various activities such as roundtables, hackatons, keynotes and workshops. In this way, they are a multiplier and create a ripple effect by deploying the locally developed, interdisciplinary innovations in a broader pan — European and global context. In Belgium, the partnership between Snowball and GLUON as Regional S+T+ARTS Center is therefore an ideal mix to bring together a strong, diverse Belgian network. Based on its expertise as a cleantech hub, Snowball represents the technological and entrepreneurial side, while GLUON provides the artistic interpretation.

From October 15th to November 21st 2021, artists can apply for 21 Regional Challenges on the European Green Deal & the New Bauhaus. The selected artists will be invited for a 6-month residency and will receive a budget of 40,000 euros to work with in one of the Regional S+T+ARTS Centers. The results of the residencies will be presented in a pan — European exhibition in the fall of 2022, including at ZKM in Karlsruhe and at MAXXI Museum in Rome. From now until December 2022, several activities are also planned in the region on the EU Green Deal and The New Bauhaus. Stay tuned!

The Regional S+T+ARTS Centers program, coordinated by Snowball and Gluon, brings together 12 European partner organizations: MAXXI Museum (IT), Art Hub Copenhagen (DK), STATE (DE), Onassis Foundation (EL), In4Art (NL), MEET (IT), CCCB (ES), Ars Electronica (AT), Sony Lab (FR), Kersnikova (SI) and CYENS Centre of Excellence (CY).

This project has received funding from S+T+ARTS(Science, Technology & the Arts), an initiative of the European Commission, launched under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Its purpose is to support collaborations between artists, scientists, engineers and researchers to develop more creative, inclusive and sustainable technologies.
