Projects

As part of the European Project ‘STARTS In The City’, within the Horizon 2020 Research & Innovation Programme, Innoviris and Gluon want to join forces and set up a co—creation platform in the Brussels Capital Region where artists, technologists, researchers, and citizens work together. Our goal? By combining art and creativity with science and technology, S+T+ARTS in the city aims to contribute to the development and reflection on technological applications that respond to the current challenges facing regions, in sectors such as healthcare, food, urban development, mobility, energy and more.

The Regional S+T+ARTS Centres (RSC) established all over Europe since 2018 are giving an answer to these global challenges, based on the belief that the creativity of artists stimulates innovation in the digital industry and sustainable progress in our society at large. RSC provide funding for cultural institutions, innovative companies, foundations, universities and research institutions that co—develop digital based projects for a more sustainable future.

With this call, we aim to initiate a series of collaborations between artists, researchers and local communities that lead to projects to raise awareness and/or provide concrete solutions to regional challenges in health, cybersecurity, food and climate.

Discover all challenges

In the framework of this project, GLUON and Innoviris (the Brussels Agency for Innovation), in collaboration with a support network of companies and research institutions, are launching four residencies. The challenges were defined in close collaboration with local expert groups and informed by the objectives of Innoviris’ Regional Innovation Plan. Selected artists will have the unique opportunity to develop artistic projects for 9 months together with local experts that provide an answer and/or reflection on one of these 4 challenges:

Challenge #1: Going wild in the city How can we create more awareness that values the interconnectedness and interdependence of all living beings in the city?

Challenge #2: Reclaiming our agency How might we address the adverse impact of AI on mental well-being and explore the interplay between algorithms, recommender systems, and our mental equilibrium to shape healthier behaviors and thought processes?

Challenge #3: Where our food comes from How can digital technologies be utilized to provide consumers with detailed information about the origin, production, and distribution of their food?

Challenge #4: The value of careHow can we reconcile developments within personalised healthcare with a patient’s individual values?

Submit your proposal before 25 August 2023, 17:00 CEST if you are an artist who wants to contribute to a social and sustainable transition of the Brussels Capital Region through experimental use of/or critical reflection on digital technologies.

The S+T+ARTS in the city project is funded by the European Union under grant agreement LC-01984766 under DG CNECT's STARTS - Science, Technology and Arts initiative.

The consortium partners are GLUON (BE) (Coordinator), Ars Electronica (AT), Hac Te (ES), INOVA+ (PT), Kersnikova (SI), MEET | Digital Culture Center (IT)
