Artist Jan De Cock, climatologist Frank Raes and interactive developer David Surprenant have started a new collaboration as part of the Scientist in Residence Programme.

Working as a researcher at the Climate Change Unit of Joint Research Center in Ispra (IT), Frank Raes and his team have found evidence that suggests our way of consuming the Earth’s resources will provoke a new ice age 22,000 years from now. Such an observation forces us to reconceive our relationship to nature from a long-term perspective. The artist, the researcher and the technologist have taken this as the starting point of their collaboration.

Inspired by the use of radio frequences by the resistance during the wars, the team aims to develop an alternative system of communication, taking the form of a device or a smartphone app. This system would offer informative content about nature, specific to the location of the user and originating from verified sources. Thanks to its identifiable design, it would allow its users to recognize each other so as to form a community of climate change resistance.
