In light of the economic crisis, climate changes, urban development or the advent of ICTs, artists are more and more addressing contemporary societal challenges in almost all spheres of human activities. Designing new stories or proposing new symbols and ideas through experimental and cross-sectoral encounters has clearly become a new necessity in an innovation-driven and post-modern society that is increasingly facing new challenges. It is a sign of the times that an ever growing number of artists and institutions are interested in the latest scientific developments accelerating change in the world. This evolution requires new initiatives to establish better connections between arts and science, between cultural & research institutions and with our citizens.
STUDIOTOPIA is a speculative journey that intends to address that. It is both a residency programme that is designed for a new generation of artists interested in collaborating with young scientists as well as a process to engage with specific audiences in a creative way.
STUDIOTOPIA encourages renowned and emerging contemporary visual artists to host a scientist or researcher in the independent & inspiring environment of their studios, reversing the usual approach whereby artists are invited to work at R&D departments of universities or companies. It also goes directly towards specific communities to raise their awareness and bring new perspectives on sustainability challenges.
13 Artists are inviting 13 scientists to their Studios!
In the course of almost two years, STUDIOTOPIA will offer 13 artists and 13 scientists a unique opportunity to collaborate together for a duration of seventeen months.
Selected scientists will be offered 1000 Euro fee, plus travel and production expenses to create a collaborative project together with the artist. In total 13 projects will be selected.
This is a unique opportunity to conduct a long-term art&science research and present the results in exhibitions, pop-up labs, lectures and workshops across the partnering institutions.
